Hikaru Shindou and Akira Touya are the main characters of the Japanese boy's comic epic Hikaru no Go (lit. "Hikaru's Go"). The story centers around the culture of the game of Go, an ancient board game popular in Japan. When Hikaru no Go gained popularity among Japanese youth, so did the actual board game- previously perceived as an "old man's game." Hikaru and Akira are 11 year olds, the former a middle-class goof-off haunted by an ancient ghost, and the latter the high-class son of a Go champion. The two spend years chasing one another through the world of professional Go in this coming-of-age tale.
