0012. Master Splinter


It's hard to pick just one of the four most famous mutant turtles in the world, but it's easy to recognize their patient, rat-bodied master, Splinter. From humble comic-book beginnings in 1984, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles took America by marketing storm, to this day still releasing movies and toys based on the franchise. Poor Splinter never gets his name in the title, despite teaching them everything they know.

0011. Inari

Inari is a popular Shinto deity, representing, among many things, rice and worldly success. More than one third of Japanese Shinto shrines are dedicated to Inari. Her (or his) messengers are foxes, and the Fushimi Inari shrine features a stunning display of hundreds of orange gates purchased in her honor.

Hailing from the planet Bob, Quailman defeats his enemies using patience, intelligence, and speed. Quailman is the superhero alter-ego of Doug, the titular character of a popular 90's television show from the golden age of Nickelodeon cartoons. Doug is a hero for mid-twenty-somethings, having given birth to the phrase "Everything I needed to know about life I learned from Doug."

0008. Gene Wilder


Gene Wilder is a well known American actor and director, starring in his most prominent roles in the 1970's and 1980's. He is well recognized as the original Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and made many extraordinary comedies alongside director Mel Brooks. He has been active in the support of ovarian cancer research and support, forming Gilda's Club after the death of his wife Gilda Radner.

Hayao Miyazaki is a beloved Japanese film maker, world renowned for his animated films for both children and adults. Miyazaki uses his films to address issues about childhood, caring for nature, and human morality. His most well known film in the United States is Spirited Away, which won an Academy Award.

0006. Robin (Carrie Kelly)

Robin is a well recognized fictional character from the Batman comic book universe, serving as Batman's reliable sidekick. There have been many Robins over the years since Batman's inception in 1939 (Robin was introduced a year later.) As we're all well familiar with the character, we know that Robin is always male- or he was- until the legendary Frank Miller wrote The Dark Knight Returns in 1986, which set the dark tone we now recognize in the new Batman live action movies. In that comic, we are introduced to this Robin, 13 year old Carrie Kelly.

0005. Abe no Seimei


Abe no Seimei was an Onmyoji who lived from 921-1010 AD. An Onmyoji was a court mystic of the Heian Era of Japan. Seimei has a well documented life, but also a great catalog of legend and lore surrounding him. He became a re-popularized figure in Japanese media since 1989, depicted as a young, beautiful man who solves mysteries and has adventures.
